THE GREEN SIDE

Most of our merchandise consists of unwanted, gently used items.

We carefully sort  through a large amount of merchandise to find those items that would be of interest to our customers and that meet our quality and condition standards.

Through this process, we can give a second life to many of these items and keep them out of landfills.

What happens to the items that do not sell in our store?

We are proud of the recycling role our store plays in our community.

Not only we recycle 95% of people's unwanted items by cleaning them and selling them to people willing to love them one more time, but of the 5% that is destined to the landfill:

Linens get bagged and distributed weekly to SPCA and other local animal shelters, where they get used in animal cages to keep animal comfortable [scroll down to view more photos of kitties and doggies].

Stuffed Animals

Another item we give to animal shelters. If you visit a shelter in Hampton Roads and see a puppy sleeping on a baby blanket next to a plush toy, well...they most likely came from the Hope House Foundation Thrift Shop!

Clothes

Picture
are distributed to shelters, homeless centers and transitional homes. These clothes are actually in good, usable condition as we rotate our stock on the sale floor each week with freshly donated items. The remainder [dirty or damaged] gets recycled and converted into rags.

Grocery Bags

Picture
Our kind customers and donors often bring us used grocery bags that we gladly re-use to bag customers' purchases. We also encourage our customers to use the re-usable bags we sell for $2 each, and when they do, they receive 10% discount on the entire purchase.

Cell Phones

Picture
Older outdated cell phones that end up not selling in the store, are packed and shipped to a recycling and refurbishing company. This way we successfully put to good use something that otherwise would be leaking deadly chemicals in the landfill.

Metal Scrap

Picture
Metal items destined to be discarded, or metal items that did not sell in the store, are transported to the metal recycling center.

Cardboard

Picture
Most donations are brought to us in cardboard boxes. In few days we accumulate quite a bit of them. So, every week, we load the truck with the flattened boxes  and we take a little trip up the street to a cardboard recycling center.

Thank you for the toys! The raccoons are having a blast climbing through the walker. The monkey is using the car, I can't wait until I catch him trying to drive it. It will be a Kodak moment. We are making use of everything, once again thank you!   Sincerely,

Debbie Jeter/President
